Ungabaga! Snack Bar!

This has been burning a hole in my pocket for a while now. It’s an animated advertisement for drive-in movie theaters, pushing an intermission trip to the snack bar, sponsored by Dr. Pepper. It was created by Keitz & Herndon, a little animation studio in Dallas, in the early 1950s.

Dr. Pepper Intermission Cartoon

I first saw it on the Cartoon Modern blog. If you dig this, you’ll also dig the book Cartoon Modern. How can you not dig something so… frosty?

[UPDATE] SideShowCarny, who uploaded this clip to YouTube, reports that it came from one of the volumes of “Hey Folks! It’s Intermission Time!” from Something Weird. They sell them on DVD for $10. Do a search on “intermission” to find them.

Bloody brilliant! What a fantastic ad. I’m a huge fan of 50′s animation, hence my love for Shag.

Tiki-Kate, you would *love* the Cartoon Modern book. I’m also a big fan of the modern style of animation that developed in the ’50s; I’ve got bits and pieces of it scattered throughout my animation DVDs, but I really wish there were a DVD version of Cartoon Modern.

Tikivixen, here’s another animated Dr. Pepper intermission ad, but it’s not nearly as good. That voice-over cat is just square, man, ya dig?

SideShowCarny, thanks so much for uploading this clip! Where did you find it?

Humuhumu, I found it on a compilation of vintage movie theatre and drive-in ads. I have more I plan on posting eventually. I think the character design and animation in this particlar ad is outstanding, though. There are a few more I have up on youtube now as well as a bunch of old movie trailers.

I just found this compilation of drive-in clips on DVD at Amazon.com — is that the compilation you found it on?

Actually, it was from one of Something Weird’s compilitions that I’ve had for several years. I pulled it from VHS. It was one of their “Hey, Folks! It’s Intermission Time!” tapes. They have several volumes of these. I’m not sure if they’ve released them on DVD yet.

Cool! Looks like they’ve got six volumes of “It’s Intermission Time” on DVD. You can find them if you do a search on “intermission” at the Soemthing Weird website. Do you remember which volume had this clip on it?

Sadly, I don’t remember. I do highly recommend that series of DVDs though.
